Hibernian came from behind to beat Edinburgh rivals Hearts 2–1 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final on Sunday, with Jamie McGrath scoring the winner to send them into a final against Rangers.
The victory at Hampden gave Marink Reedijk his first win as Hibs manager. His side will return to Scotland’s national stadium for the Premier Sports Cup final on 13 December, following Rangers’ victory over Aberdeen in Saturday’s other semi-final.
Hearts struck first when Claudio Braga headed in Calvin Miller’s corner after only four minutes. Hibs responded through Martin Boyle, who collected Owen Elding’s pass and finished via a post to bring the sides level.
McGrath completed the turnaround three minutes before half-time. Hearts goalkeeper Beau Reus stopped Joe Newell’s initial effort, but McGrath reacted to the rebound and put Hibs ahead.
The match remained open after the interval. Braga threatened again for Hearts, while Boyle and Marko Ivezic were denied at the other end. Hibs’ goalkeeper also kept out a powerful Sabri Guendouz attempt as Hearts pressed for an equaliser.
Braga had another headed chance in the closing stages, but Hibs protected their advantage and secured a derby success on a stage that had previously brought them considerable frustration.
Hearts had won all four earlier meetings between the Edinburgh clubs at Hampden, in 2006, 2012, 2020 and 2022. Sunday’s result ended that sequence and gave Reedijk a significant early success after a difficult start in charge.
Hibs had collected their first league point under the Dutchman in a draw at St Mirren during the week. The semi-final victory now gives them a chance to turn that improvement into silverware in December.
