Harriet Dart won the first WTA Tour singles title of her career on Sunday, coming from a set down to beat Austria’s Lilli Tagger 4–6, 6–3, 6–4 in the Guangzhou Open final. The 30-year-old British qualifier completed a demanding seven-match run to turn her first tour-level singles final into a trophy.

Dart, who began the week ranked No. 115, is projected to return to the world’s top 100 when the rankings are updated. Six of her seven victories in Guangzhou, including qualifying, came in three sets.

Fourth seed Tagger took the early advantage in the final, breaking Dart in the opening game. The Briton recovered to draw level at 4–4, but the 18-year-old immediately broke again and served out the opening set.

Dart responded by taking the first break-point opportunity of the second set to move 5–3 ahead, then held serve to force a decider. Neither player could establish control for long in the final set, which featured five consecutive service breaks.

The decisive shift came when Dart broke for 4–3 and then saved two break points to hold for 5–3. Tagger survived two championship points in the following game, but Dart held to 15 in the next game, sealing the title with an unreturned serve.

The victory completed a sequence of comebacks for Dart, who recovered from a set down in each of her last three matches. She had beaten fifth seed Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals before saving three match points against Chinese wildcard Xinran Sun in Saturday’s semi-final.

Dart, coached by former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, also overcame second seed Janice Tjen earlier in the main draw. Sunday’s win reversed her defeat by Tagger in the final of the ITF W100 tournament in Fujairah earlier this year, giving the Briton the title in their first WTA Tour meeting.
