Shadab Khan’s first one-day international century carried Pakistan to a one-wicket victory over England in Lahore on Sunday after the hosts had been reduced to 154 for nine. His unbeaten 113 from 96 balls helped Pakistan reach 243 for nine with 17 deliveries remaining.

Shadab and Haris Rauf added an unbroken 89 for the final wicket, the highest partnership for the last pair in a successful ODI chase. Rauf contributed seven not out from 19 balls, providing the support Shadab needed to overturn a position in which Pakistan still required 88 to win.

The match appeared to be over when Shadab was given out lbw to Gus Atkinson on 97. A review revealed an inside edge and kept the chase alive. Rauf eventually struck debutant Henry Crocombe for four down the ground to complete the win.

England had controlled much of Pakistan’s innings through Jamie Overton, who took three for 43 and bowled his full 10 overs in one spell. Their early breakthroughs left the hosts 31 for three, but the last wicket proved beyond them.

Earlier, Ben Duckett made 105 from 111 balls in England’s total of 241 all out in 46.4 overs. He shared a 93-run partnership with Sam Curran, who scored 42, before Atkinson’s unbeaten 36 gave the visitors late momentum. Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi finished with four for 46.

The result secured Pakistan’s place in the tri-series final and left England without a win after three matches. England could be eliminated before their remaining group game against Sri Lanka on Thursday: Sri Lanka would confirm that outcome by beating Pakistan on Tuesday.
