Elena Rybakina successfully defended the Ningbo Open title on Sunday, defeating Leylah Fernandez 6–2, 6–2 in the final to claim her fourth trophy of the season. It was the Kazakh’s first tournament victory since she became world No. 1 following the US Open.

The top seed completed the final in 1 hour, 16 minutes. She broke Fernandez twice in each set and held serve throughout, giving the Canadian no route back after taking control. The result delivered the first successful defence of a WTA Tour singles title in Rybakina’s career.

Ningbo adds to a season’s collection that already includes the Australian Open, Stuttgart and the US Open. With four titles, Rybakina now leads the tour for tournament victories in 2026, while the win was also her 53rd tour-level match success of the year.

Her career singles title total has reached 15, including nine on hard courts. Ningbo is her seventh WTA 500 title, and she has won all eight matches she has played at the event across her two appearances.

Fernandez entered the final seeking a seventh career title and a second in successive months after winning in Singapore in September. The world No. 30 had reached the championship match without being seeded, but could not prevent Rybakina extending her advantage in their rivalry.

Rybakina now leads their head-to-head record 4–2, having won their past three tour-level meetings. Both players are due to compete in Tokyo next week as the season moves towards the WTA Finals, with Rybakina’s latest title strengthening her bid to finish the year at No. 1.
