Świątek ends 2026 season to take longer break for recovery

iSport UK sports news

Iga Świątek has ended her 2026 season, announcing on Tuesday that she will play no further tournaments this year as she takes a longer break to rest and recover.

The six-time major champion made the decision public on Instagram later in the day, extending the scope of her earlier withdrawal from the Ningbo Open. That initial announcement concerned a persistent left thigh injury; the new statement closes her competitive schedule for the rest of 2026.

Świątek explained that the demands of recent months, and of the past couple of years, had left her needing more time for her body to recover fully. She described a season shaped by challenges and changes, while also recognising what she had learnt.

Her assessment also included encouragement for the future. She highlighted the work completed with her team during the second half of the year and the progress they had made, saying that gave her confidence about what comes next.

The Polish player's final appearance of the campaign will therefore remain her Wuhan Open semi-final defeat by compatriot Maja Chwalińska last week. The same thigh problem had troubled her during that match before she withdrew from Ningbo.

Ending the season also confirms that Świątek will not appear at November's WTA Finals in Indian Wells. Her earlier Ningbo withdrawal had complicated her attempt to secure the remaining singles place; Tuesday's subsequent announcement makes clear that she will take no further part this year.

Świątek thanked supporters and expressed continued enthusiasm for tennis and for improving when she returns. The statement did not name a return tournament or set a date for her next competitive appearance.
