Bavuma hits career-best 179 as South Africa recover against Australia

iSport UK sports news

Temba Bavuma struck a career-best 179 as South Africa recovered to declare on 425-9 before reducing Australia to 3-1 at stumps on the third day of the second Test in Gqeberha.

The captain faced 334 balls and shared substantial partnerships with Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer at St George's Park on Tuesday. Australia finished 422 runs behind, with Travis Head unbeaten on one and nightwatchman Scott Boland on two.

Lower order transforms the innings

South Africa resumed on 97-5 after rain had disrupted the opening two days. Their position worsened when Mitchell Starc removed Wiaan Mulder, leaving the hosts 110-6.

Jansen responded with 85 from 100 deliveries in a seventh-wicket stand of 132 with Bavuma. His attacking innings gave the hosts a way back into the contest before Boland dismissed him shortly after Australia took the second new ball.

Harmer then made 82 from 157 balls as he and Bavuma added 183, a South African Test record for the eighth wicket. Bavuma completed his fifth Test century during the recovery and continued until Starc eventually found his edge late in the day.

The declaration followed the captain's dismissal. Boland finished with five wickets for Australia, including the important breakthrough that ended Jansen's innings.

Rabada strikes before the close

Kagiso Rabada removed Nic Maddinson for a duck with his fourth delivery as Australia began their reply. The wicket came in Rabada's first competitive match since May, following his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Fading light prevented South Africa from continuing with their fast bowlers, and Head and Boland survived the remaining overs.

Australia lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs. Two days remain in the Gqeberha match as South Africa seek to draw level.
