Australia bowled out for 99 as Head resists South Africa after follow-on

iSport UK sports news

South Africa put Australia under severe pressure in the second Test in Gqeberha on Wednesday, dismissing the tourists for 99 and enforcing the follow-on before Travis Head led resistance through to stumps.

Australia ended day four on 156–4 in their second innings, still 170 runs behind. Head was unbeaten on 87, leaving the visitors with six wickets available as they try to save the match on Thursday's final day.

Marco Jansen took 5–33 in Australia's first innings, with Kagiso Rabada returning 2–33 and Wiaan Mulder 2–14. South Africa's 425–9 declared gave the hosts a first-innings advantage of 326, allowing captain Temba Bavuma to send Australia straight back in.

Steve Smith provided Australia's highest first-innings score with 28 and reached 11,000 Test runs, becoming the third Australian to achieve the milestone after Ricky Ponting and Allan Border. Mulder then bowled him as South Africa completed the dismissal of the visitors.

Australia had resumed on 3–1, but Jansen removed nightwatchman Scott Boland and Head before adding the wickets of Matt Renshaw, Alex Carey and Beau Webster. The collapse transformed South Africa's substantial lead into an opportunity to push for a series-levelling victory.

Rabada struck early in the follow-on innings, removing Nic Maddinson for eight. Head and Marnus Labuschagne then shared a second-wicket partnership of 92, offering Australia a more sustained response after their first-innings failure.

Simon Harmer dismissed Labuschagne for 39 before Rabada bowled Renshaw. Harmer also trapped Webster lbw, leaving Head to carry Australia's hopes into the last day. South Africa still need six wickets, while Australia must first erase the remaining deficit to make the hosts bat again.

Australia lead the three-match series 1–0 after winning the opening Test in Durban by 214 runs. The second match remains unfinished.
