Anderson will not receive Lancashire deal for 2027, reports say

James Anderson faces an uncertain playing future after Lancashire decided against offering him a contract for the 2027 season, according to BBC and Press Association reports published on Wednesday, 21 October.

The 44-year-old has continued in county cricket since his England career ended in 2024. The BBC reported that it was not known whether he would retire or seek a deal with another county. Lancashire declined to comment to the Press Association.

Anderson captained Lancashire in this season's County Championship and took 50 wickets, a total exceeded by only six other bowlers in Division Two. He was named the county's Championship player of the year, despite the team finishing next to bottom.

The decision comes amid a review of Lancashire's cricket operations, with Dame Sarah Storey serving as interim chair and Richard Kenyon installed as chief executive. Paul Farbrace became director of cricket earlier this month.

Anderson made his Lancashire debut in 2001 and took on the Championship captaincy during the second half of 2025 before being appointed for the full 2026 campaign. He will turn 45 during next summer.

His international record remains unmatched by an England bowler: 704 wickets in 188 Tests. His final Test came against West Indies at Lord's in July 2024, after which he continued playing for the club where he had developed as a teenager.

The Lancashire connection also includes the county's 2011 Championship title and his 1,000th first-class wicket, taken against Kent at Old Trafford in 2021. The club renamed the ground's Pavilion End in his honour in 2017.
