Ben Shelton reached the Paris Masters semi-finals for the first time on Friday, beating Tommy Paul 6–4, 4–6, 6–3 in an all-American quarter-final. The result ended Paul’s hopes of reaching the ATP Finals and secured a debut appearance in Turin for Frances Tiafoe.
Third seed Shelton regained control after Paul levelled the match by taking the second set. He broke once in each of the sets he won and lost his own serve only once throughout the contest at the Plenitude Arena.
Shelton converted two of his four break points and moved ahead 3–2 in his career meetings with Paul. The victory put him into a third Masters 1000 semi-final; on both previous occasions, at the Canadian event in 2025 and 2026, he went on to win the title.
Paul, seeded 12th, had needed to reach the Paris final to keep his qualification attempt alive. His defeat therefore settled Tiafoe’s place among the eight players at the season-ending tournament.
The ATP confirmed that Tiafoe, 28, is the seventh player to qualify. He joins Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Shelton, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Fils in the field for the event at Turin’s Inalpi Arena from 15 to 22 November.
Tiafoe won the Halle title this season and reached finals in Cincinnati and Acapulco. He also returned to the US Open semi-finals, reaching that stage in New York for the third time. Cobolli and Fils will also be making their ATP Finals debuts.
The remaining qualification place rests on Taylor Fritz’s Paris quarter-final against Alcaraz. Victory would send Fritz to Turin; defeat would give Rafael Jódar his first appearance at the event.
