Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket and from Victoria’s first-class and one-day sides, while continuing his career in franchise Twenty20 competitions. The 38-year-old’s decision ends his time with Australia’s T20 team after 130 appearances, following his retirement from one-day internationals in June 2025.

Maxwell finishes with 2,897 T20 international runs at a strike rate of 154.42, alongside 51 wickets and 62 catches. He is Australia’s third-highest run-scorer in the format behind David Warner and Aaron Finch, and shares the record of five T20 international centuries with India’s Rohit Sharma.

His final Australia appearance came against Oman at this year’s T20 World Cup. He took two wickets for 13 runs from three overs and was not required to bat.

Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he had hoped for a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during Australia’s forthcoming T20 series against England, but understood the selectors’ intention to give younger players international experience.

Across seven Tests, 149 one-day internationals and 130 T20 internationals, Maxwell represented Australia 286 times. He was part of the teams that won the 2015 and 2023 one-day World Cups and struck the winning runs in the 2021 T20 World Cup final.

His unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup remains one of his defining innings. Australia recovered from 91 for seven to chase 292, with Maxwell making his double century from 128 deliveries. At the same tournament, he hit a 40-ball hundred against the Netherlands, the fastest century in the competition’s history.

Maxwell also confirmed the end of his List A and first-class career after recently playing one-day matches for Victoria. He will continue with Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, where his contract runs through the 2027–28 season.
