Taylor Fritz recorded the 100th Masters 1000 victory of his career on Thursday, beating Arthur Fils 6–3, 6–4 to reach the Paris Masters quarter-finals. The American will face Carlos Alcaraz on Friday as he continues his pursuit of a place at the season-ending ATP Finals.
The 11th seed controlled the evening-session match at the Plenitude Arena despite the support for French No. 1 Fils. Fritz did not face a break point, keeping the world No. 7 under pressure with a service performance that included 14 aces.
Fritz landed 77 per cent of his first serves and needed only one break in each set. The result also matched his best previous showing at the Paris tournament, with a first semi-final now one victory away.
The opening set remained on serve through five games before Fritz converted his first break opportunity to move 4–2 ahead. He protected that advantage and closed the set with a hold to love, leaving Fils needing a change of direction.
Fils saved two break points in the opening game of the second set, but Fritz broke at the next opportunity to lead 2–1. The Frenchman could not create a chance to recover the deficit, and the American finished the match with another service game to love.
Alcaraz had advanced without playing after Matteo Berrettini withdrew from their third-round meeting with an arm injury. His quarter-final with Fritz will bring together two players whose routes through Thursday were markedly different.
For Fils, the defeat ended his home tournament in the last 16. He had already secured qualification for the ATP Finals, while Fritz’s attempt to join him in Turin continues.
