Vincent Kompany will remain under medical care after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground on Friday, with his coaching staff taking over responsibility for training and matches until further notice.
Bayern confirmed that the Belgian was watching a session involving the club’s reserve team when he required treatment. He is undergoing detailed examinations in hospital. The announcement gave no diagnosis or date for his return to work.
Sporting board member Max Eberl said the club would prioritise Kompany’s health, provide the support he needs and give him time to recover. Eberl also expressed confidence in the staff who will cover the head coach’s responsibilities.
Coaching staff to oversee preparations
Sky Sports reported, citing Sky in Germany, that Kompany’s condition was stable. The broadcaster said he had recently been affected by a viral infection and missed Bayern’s pre-match press conference before Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal. He was back in the dugout for that match, which finished 2–2.
Bayern are scheduled to visit Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday 25 October. The hosts’ official match preview confirms a 17:30 local kick-off at the Europa-Park Stadion. The temporary arrangements announced by Bayern therefore cover preparation for their next league fixture as well as training.
Kompany has coached Bayern since July 2024, after spells in charge of Anderlecht and Burnley. He led Burnley to promotion in his first season there before moving to Germany. As a player, the former defender captained Manchester City and won four Premier League titles during his time in England.
