Sri Lanka chase 430 to beat England despite Brook double century

iSport UK sports news

Sri Lanka chased 430 to beat England by two wickets with one ball remaining in Rawalpindi on Thursday.

Their 430–8 in 49.5 overs completed the second-highest successful chase in men's one-day international history, overturning England's 429–4 after Harry Brook had scored a record-breaking double century in the tri-series match.

Pavan Rathnayake made 130 from 106 balls, Avishka Fernando scored 97 from 83, and Dasun Shanaka struck 97 from just 50 deliveries, including eight sixes. Janith Liyanage finished unbeaten on 61 from 27 balls to carry Sri Lanka over the line.

The chase had begun badly, with Sri Lanka slipping to 24–2. Captain Kusal Mendis was run out without facing a delivery after Gus Atkinson deflected Fernando's drive onto the non-striker's stumps. Fernando and Rathnayake then rebuilt with a third-wicket stand of 166.

Sri Lanka needed eight from the final over, but Josh Tongue bowled Dunith Wellalage and Eshan Malinga with consecutive deliveries to leave the batting side eight wickets down. Asitha Fernando took a single before Liyanage hit the winning six from the penultimate ball.

Brook's 202 came from 116 balls, with 21 fours and 10 sixes. He reached 200 in 114 deliveries, the fastest double century in men's ODIs, and became England's first batter to reach the landmark. He was caught off Liyanage from the last ball of England's innings.

Will Jacks added an unbeaten 66 from 30 balls, sharing a fourth-wicket partnership of 185 with Brook. Joe Root contributed 69 and became the first England batter to reach 8,000 ODI runs, while opener Tom Banton made 50.

England have now lost both opening matches in the tournament and next face Pakistan in Lahore on Sunday, 25 October. Sri Lanka secured their first win after losing to the hosts in their opener.
