Jalen Hurts sidelined indefinitely after blood clots found in lungs
Jalen Hurts has been ruled out of contact football indefinitely after further medical tests identified blood clots in his lungs, the Philadelphia Eagles and his agent Nicole Lynn announced on Monday.
The quarterback has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is receiving blood thinners and cannot take part in contact activities during that treatment. The joint statement said he was clinically stable, expected to recover fully and could resume contact football once off the medication.
Return timetable remains uncertain
Philadelphia have not given a return date. The Inquirer reported that Hurts could miss the remainder of the 2026 season, although the team statement did not confirm a season-ending absence.
Hurts was already on injured reserve after the Eagles placed him on the list on Saturday, 17 October. Tanner McKee started Sunday's defeat by Carolina and is expected to continue at quarterback. Joe Milton, added on Friday, and rookie Cole Payton are also on the roster.
Diagnosis follows further testing
The latest findings follow examinations since Hurts reported calf discomfort after practice on 8 October. He told the team he had taken a cleat to the calf during the Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
He practised the following day and travelled with the squad to London. An ultrasound there initially found a superficial clot in his calf, and he played against Jacksonville on 11 October.
After returning to the United States, Hurts practised on Wednesday. A follow-up scan that evening showed movement in the clot. The Eagles ruled him out of the Panthers match on Thursday before putting him on injured reserve.
The club said he would remain involved with the team and continue conditioning during his recovery.
